English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Vision

At Devonshire Primary Academy we aim to welcome the cultural, linguistic and education experiences pupils with EAL contribute to the school.  We ensure strategies are in place to support pupils with EAL and enable pupils with EAL to become confident and to acquire the language skills needed to reach their full academic potential.

Teaching Our EAL Pupils

We provide a welcoming atmosphere for newly arrived EAL pupils and ensure their inclusion into their new classes with a buddy system.   School undertakes a timely initial assessment to gauge pupils’ English abilities as well as asking parents for information regarding fluency in their home language.  Where a pupil is assessed as having little or no English, support will be provided in the form of survival lanyards, word and visual support mats and visual timetables.

Targeted children will be given access to the Learning Village programme for at least 10 minutes three times each week.  All staff strive to model good spoken English to promote learning of the language.

How to Help at Home

If your child is given a Learning Village login, this can be used at home as well as at school and is a research-based teaching tool for the improvement of your child’s English.
